The edge inscription reads: STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS. This was taken from a letter written by Isaac Newton to fellow scientist Robert Hooke, acknowledging how much he owed to the work of others. The actual words in the letter were "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."
