1968

Prior to decimalisation, 5p and 10p coins issued to circulate alongside shillings and two-shilling pieces.

1969

Issue of 50p coin, the world's first coin to be struck in the shape of an equilateral curve heptagon.

1971

Full decimalisation arrived with the issue of ½p, 1p and 2p coins.

1973

New 50p design by David wynne to commermorate Britian's entry into the ECC.

1982

The word 'New' removed from decimal coins, and a seven sided 20p coin issued.

1983

New £1 coin issued, its reverse design by former Royal Mint Chief Engraver, Eric Sewell.

1984

½p coin withdrawan from circulation.

1986

£2 coin issued to commemorate the Commonwealth games, the first British coin to mark a sporting event.Ì

1990

Reduction in size of 5p.

1992

The first plated bronze coins struck, and 10p reduced in size.

1997

Two pound coin is the first bi-colour coin for the UK

1998
